Creating a Positive Future of Work

Recognizing that new ideas are needed to support a thriving workforce in today's economy, the Aspen Institute Future of Work Initiative has released research on the changing economy's impact on workers. The Initiative's "Toward a New Capitalism" report and "Portable Benefits Resource Guide" provide solutions for empowering workers, realigning incentives for business and the workforce to address the challenges posed by globalization and new technology, and creating a modern social safety net.

Addressing Recidivism

Check out Pew Stateline's summary of the policies states are using to address recidivism, including efforts that give ex-offenders the opportunity to build a successful life rather than return to crime, while also easing spending on corrections, which has increased at triple the rate of funding for public education in the last three decades. Solutions run from "banning the box" to expungement to opening access to public benefits, and Pew outlines how different states are implementing them.

Building a High-Tech Economy

NewDEAL Leader South Bend, IN Mayor Pete Buttigieg is working to create a high-tech economy in South Bend, calling it the "Beta City," where new ideas can be tested. As part of this process, the Mayor is working with community leaders and developers to convert pieces of South Bend's manufacturing past, like transforming an old Studebaker plant into an innovation hub where high-tech startups and manufacturing innovators can share space to experiment. Learn about this project and how Mayor Buttigieg plans to leverage South Bend's resources to revolutionize his city's economy.
