Marilyn Strickland was sworn in as Mayor of Tacoma in 2010. Born in Seoul, Korea, Marilyn has professional experience in both the private and public sectors. She served as Development Officer for the Tacoma Public Library and has held management positions with the American Cancer Society, Starbucks Coffee Company and JayRay Communications. Prior to being elected to the mayor’s office, she served as a City Council member for two years.
Under Marilyn’s leadership, Tacoma continues to attract new businesses and encourage the growth of local industries by adopting new technologies such as fiberoptics. She has worked to improve development methods and establish practices that sustainably renovate old spaces and buildings for new use. Tacoma businesses now have access to support such as the Historically Underutilized Business Program, which provides contracting opportunities and business management assistance to qualified small business contractors.
Among Marilyn’s many positions, she serves as chair of the Government Performance and Finance Committee and as an executive committee member for the Tacoma Pierce County Economic Development Board.
