On a request from Congressman Gerald Connolly, a member of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and of the New Democrat Coalition, NewDEAL Executive Director Debbie Cox Bultan submitted congressional testimony to a hearing on Federalism's Implications for Treating States as Stakeholders. Read her full testimony, in which she outlines three principles that the federal government should follow to ensure an effective relationship with state and local officials. She applauded positive steps taken in recent years to give states more flexibility, including on education and workforce policy, while criticizing President Trump's infrastructure proposal as "heavy-handed federalism at its worst."
The Kauffman Foundation held their annual State of Entrepreneurship address this week, discussing how startup trends are doing and the importance of eliminating barriers to entrepreneurship to promote inclusive economic growth. Karen Freeman-Wilson, Mayor
NewDEAL Leader Gary, IN Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson announced the new Gary Scholars program, through which the city will award college scholarships to high school students who are planning a career in public service. The mayor highlighted the importance of support from the community for students to succeed, and plans to award $100,000 in scholarships for the first year, followed by $50,000 each year after.
