Opportunity to Earn

In their opening bid to the 2020 Democratic “ideas primary” Third Way proposed a new economic cause for Democrats: creating and championing a social contract for the Digital Age—so that everyone, everywhere has the opportunity to earn a good life. In a second memo they outline 12 bold policy ideas designed for the information economy that rethink job-creating investments, reinvent postsecondary education, and redesign pay and benefits. NewDEAL will partner with Third Way on an event around this new forward-looking social contract this summer in Columbus, OH.

The Importance of State and Local Governance

In an extended interview with Route Fifity, NewDEAL Leader South Bend, IN Mayor Pete Buttigieg debunks long-held views of the DC political class about the value of state and local government, and emphasizes that the most compelling, innovative public policy solutions are not coming from Washington. Mayor Buttigieg says state and city governments are often on the "cutting edge" of making government smarter and adapting to new realities as they deal with issues on the ground every day. Making Child Care and Education Affordable

NewDEAL Leader Montgomery County, MD Council President Hans Riemer introduced a new bill this week to improve access to early childhood education and affordable quality child care. His "Ready to Learn Initiative" would create subsidies for families earning less than 200% of the federal poverty level, focusing initially on child care for 4-year-olds in order to ensure that all children enter kindergarten ready to learn.
