Zach Wahls is an Iowa Senator from Coralville and represents Johnson County, Cedar County, and Muscatine County. His winning campaign was focused on restoring workers' rights, advancing Iowa's public education system, and expanding access to affordable health care for every Iowan. In the Senate, he serves on the Agriculture, Education, Ways and Means, and Appropriations Committees, and is the ranking member of the Education Appropriations Subcommittee. The first bill he filed as an Iowa Senator called for the development of a strategic plan to transition Iowa to meet 80% of its energy needs with renewable sources by 2030 and 100% by 2050.
When he is not serving the people of Iowa, Zach operates a small business with his sister, selling playing cards online and in brick-and-mortar stores. He is the author of the bestselling book My Two Moms: Lessons of Love, Strength and What Makes a Family and a graduate of the University of Iowa and Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School. Zach is a proud Eagle Scout, and he co-founded and served as Executive Director of Scouts for Equality, which led the national campaign to end LGBTQ discrimination in the Boy Scouts of America. His testimony before the Iowa House Judiciary Committee about growing up with lesbian parents was YouTube’s most-watched political video of 2011 and has been watched over twenty million times.
